Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist and printmaker who lived during the Edo period (late 18th to early 19th century). He is widely regarded as one of Japan's most influential and celebrated artists, known for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock printing and his iconic series of landscape prints, including the famous "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji."

Hokusai's artistic career spanned several decades, during which he adopted various names and experimented with different styles and subjects. He began his career as an apprentice to a woodblock carver, later becoming a pupil of the ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shunshō. Under Shunshō's influence, Hokusai honed his skills in traditional Japanese printmaking techniques and developed a distinctive style characterized by bold compositions, dynamic lines, and intricate details.

Hokusai's most renowned work, "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," was published between 1826 and 1833 and features a series of landscape prints depicting Japan's iconic mountain from different perspectives and in various seasons and weather conditions. The series includes his most famous print, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," which has become an enduring symbol of Japanese art and culture worldwide.

In addition to landscapes, Hokusai explored a wide range of subjects in his art, including portraits, historical scenes, and depictions of daily life in Edo-period Japan. He was also a prolific illustrator and produced instructional manuals on drawing and painting, contributing to the development of Japanese art education.

Hokusai's legacy extends far beyond his lifetime, influencing generations of artists both in Japan and around the world. His innovative approach to composition, use of colour, and ability to capture the essence of natural phenomena continue to inspire and captivate audiences to this day, cementing his status as a master of Japanese art.
